Overview: This was a very short trip to get a taste of the diving in this area. I was not overly impressed with the reef but the amount of fish is excellent. I only did 4 dives here with Aquaworld dive company, courtesy of Juan Cardona who is an excellent u/w photographer and guide. He showed us his top sites. We were supposed to be seeing schooling Bull sharks but they weren’t in their usual place which was hugely disappointing.
Fish Life: The Snapper and Grunt fish schools located in a huge 60′ deep bowl were amazing! There must have been 1000’s of fish. A huge Hawksbill Turtle was feeding on the reef. Eagle and Sting rays cruised by, almost unnoticed. I also saw Porkfish, Permits, loads of Parrotfish and a Midnight Parrotfish (not common). The area has been made a marine park hence the fish life has returned and is in abundance.
Reef Health: To get to the bowl the reef was mostly flat rock with a scattering of small corals, not something to excite. The reef walls of the bowl were covered in corals and sponges with lots of colour, but on the whole of what we saw it wasn’t impressive.
Highlights: On our second day we were taken to a large wreck at about 70′ where the current was impossible to swim against, however the Eagle rays had no problem doing this. They passed us in pairs and sometimes 5-10 in a group, a fabulous site! This is a regular occurrence.
Dive Centre/Boat Service: Aquaworld – excellent boats and service. Ours was fast and took 45 minutes to get out to the dive sites. Only problem was the sea conditions rocked the boat, we did 2 tank dives and it wasn’t possible to get off in-between which caused upset tummies. l broke my flash arm on the first day and they provided another one for the rest of my trip! Good job. Dive briefs were very thorough and detailed. The dive guides were excellent always pointing out new creatures and l didnt have to wash or lift anything. Perfect.
First Time/Return: My first time here. I was very disappointed not too see the Bull sharks. 🙁 Am l likely to return? Not sure, l have other places l want to dive first.
Current/Vis: In places the currents were very strong, it just depended where you were. Sea was 24- 26ºC and after an hour I got cold in a 4mm suit. Vis was excellent between 60-100’.
