Location: Lembeh Resort, North Lembeh, North Sulawesi, Indonesia
Overview: Where do l begin? This is a world famous dive destination for diving with critters or small creatures and it totally delivers! Big time. Lembeh Resort is on Lembeh Island and is also the top place to stay. Beautiful rooms some with amazing views over the strait between the island and mainland. The staff know your name within a few days and are happy, friendly and the food is excellent. There is a family atmosphere here, like a home rather than a hotel! Singles are scooped up and share a large table together with the delightful managers.
Fish Life: If we call critters fish life it has everything. Harlequin Shrimp, Blue Ringed Octopus, Peacock Mantis Shrimp (my fave), Pigmy Seahorses!, Humped Back Scorpion fish, Orangutan Crab, Hairy Octopus, Flamboyant Cuttlefish, Ghost Pipefish, Squat Lobsters, Porcelain Crabs, 2 Horn Box Crab, Soft Coral Crabs, Mimic Octopus, Wunderpus, Long Arm Octopus, Dragon Scorpion fish , Hairy Frogfish, Clown Frogfish, Blu Ribbon Eels and many more similar species.
Reef Health: Many of the dives are ‘muck’ dives which means you are diving on mucky sandy sloping bottom. Doesn’t sound great but this is where you will find the most amazing creatures. Where there is a coral reef they are in excellent condition and beautiful.
Highlights: You have to dive Nudi Falls and Nudi Retreat the latter has an amazing hard coral garden under the boat which is beautiful. Try a dusk dive to watch Mandarin fish do their thing!
Dive Centre/Boat Service: critters@lembeh run the diving services here. It is the most incredible diving facility. The dive crews do everything for you except put your camera together. There are 4 boats and loads of dive guides so you always dive in small groups with the dive ‘spotters’. The spotters find everything for you and keep you informed throughout the dive. I highly recommend guides Opo and Jhoe but they are all super.
First Time/Return: First time here and will return for sure. The dive crew sing whilst they are waiting for the next dive and they’re good!
Current/Vis: Very little in the way of current. This time of year the wind is low so sea was calm everyday. Vis varied from 50′-60′ to 90′ on the pinnacle dives.
Favourite dive site: For me the best dive was Angels Window, this is a pinnacle reef dive going from 120′ to 15′ depth. Its covered in soft corals and sea life. There are 4 species of Pigmy seahorses here on 1 dive! Plus you can find almost any critter on the sandy sloping sea bed and walls.
Marine Park: The whole area is a marine park.
Other: Lembeh Resort has a large dedicated camera room where you can safely leave your gear for your entire stay. There are towels, power points and lights in your own work station areas. Water tanks and even an air blower to dry equipment after diving. Gear storage and hanging cubicles photographers dream room! Sascha Janson is the resident camera expert and very helpful. Lauren Siba is the guest liaison and always there at the end of a dive to check you enjoyed it, so helpful.
