Whilst on a dive trip in Indonesia l was blessed with seeing quite a few Mantis shrimp. In Indonesia the macro life is incredible and I saw my favourite creature the Peacock Mantis Shrimp, what an amazing character. One of the largest shrimps and by far the most powerful. They have 2 ‘fist’ type appendages which they use to strike the shells of their food; such as crabs and other crustaceans. These fists have the same amount of power as a bullet fired from a standard pistol, most incredible! I wouldn’t want to get too close because if they struck the camera lens it would surely smash to pieces.
I had the most amazing 10 minute experience with this particular shrimp towards the end of my last dive in the Lembeh Straits. I watched as it cleaned it’s burrow, where you can see it in the photos, coming up every few minutes with armfuls of small rubble and placing it outside not far from the entrance. It knew I was there watching and carried on its business quite unperturbed. It stopped from time to time and looked me. Who knows what it was thinking but I was the one mesmerised and so thankful to be able to watch such an amazing creature. One of their favourite foods is starfish.
