This is a short video of one of the tiny Pygmy Seahorses that I found or rather was shown whilst diving off Bangka Island which is off Manado North East Indonesia. This was the first time I’d seen these beyond cuteness seahorses and they lived up to all my expectations. I just couldn’t believe how small they were, the one in this video is only an inch long an inch! Can you imagine that?
They seem to be made of the same stuff they live on which of course is impossible. They live on gorgonian sea fans and live on the same one for life. The fans are huge by comparison – anything up to 1.5 meters across. Fans feed on passing plankton and therefore are situated in areas which usually get strong regular currents. You can see the current in the film and see the seahorse hanging on with its’ tail wrapped around the coral branch.
I had to illuminate the seahorse which unfortunately it didn’t like, I did this in order to show the true colour of the gorgonian and the seahorse – quite a strong red colour. It is amazing how much alike they are; I would never have spotted it if it wasn’t pointed out to me by the dive guide. This piece of gorgonian was deep down at 100 feet deep the seahorses seem to like it deep.
